Because the child is SURPRISED that the mom “knows how” to cook pancakes. She tried to do something nice and instead got a passive-aggressive comment about either her cooking ability or her family service habits.
Hmm. I took it as “Mom knows how to make them. Dad doesn’t do it right.” I would think it would have the opposite effect on Mom that way.
Perhaps putting a question mark so that it was phrased in this manner makes more sense,
“Mom knows how to make pancakes?! and bacon too?!”
I highly doubt a 4 year old can be “passive-aggressive”. I’m not even sure a 4 year old can be snarky.

Maybe mom’s insecurity needs analysis.
While I don’t know who this John Doe is, I definitely agree with him.
