I had the same question when I was little. I assumed a shalmeno was a signifying event. by which “ye are my disciples.”
I don’t feel quite so foolish now
Ok, so I’m not crazy, I thought a “shalmeno” was some type of decree or announcement. I didn’t figure it out until we learned the song in sign language.
I totally asked the same thing when I was a little kid. My mom thought I was crazy.
I thought that a “shalmeno” was a commandment or rule.

I used to sing it that way, too. (I won’t tell you how old I was when I finally figured it out, but I think it involved a hymnbook and Seminary…)
I always thought a shalmeno was like an old, rusty, corrugated-tin shed. And the song made NO sense.
